New coronavirus cases in the U.S. have been trending down for weeks, with the daily rolling average falling 50% from its peak in early January. Coronavirus deaths, which typically lag cases, are declining as well.

While that’s good news, it’s worth reflecting just how brutal this winter has been. Of the 465,000 coronavirus deaths in the country, half have come in the 99 days from Nov. 1 through Feb. 8.

More than two-thirds of the more than 27 million reported Covid-19 cases in the U.S. have been recorded since the beginning of November. However, spring cases were most likely underreported because of a lack of widespread testing.

The winter wave has been the most severe of the three in wide swaths of the country, an effect more pronounced in some regions than others depending on when the pandemic arrived in force. The period since Nov. 1 has been the pandemic’s deadliest in 44 states.

35 states have seen more than half of all total coronavirus deaths since Nov. 1. For nine states, winter has been the deadliest wave. Tap the link in our bio for a visual breakdown where the winter wave has hit the hardest.
