The vocalist, Rei, tells no lies in the lyrics he pens—that is the reason behind why the messages and meanings of the band’s music hits home so well. Newspeak is a multicultural band. Their collective musicianship has given rise to a unique sound that is unconventional when compared to the rock scene of the UK. With Newspeak’s music, one immediately has to point to their romantic lyrics coupled with melodies that have this expansive scale to them. "I feel our music roots can be found in bands like The Beatles, who my parents always listened to when I was a kid, and Spitz," explains lead vocalist Rei. "Of course there are other bands too, but I’m someone who wants to put out songs that people will want to come back and listen to again, so I think that’s why I’ve always listened to those two even 5, 10, however many years later. We write our songs so that the people who listen to them can momentarily feel the momentary feelings of each of them. That’s why all of us in the band make an effort to write lyrics and phrases that aren’t conventional to us ourselves." The band released their first acoustic EP, “The Mind Motel’s Acoustics,” digitally in January of this year. They dropped a live performance of the track “Jerusalem” from the record in which they capture the song’s warmth. Today, Rei has a classical look with smaller lenses, Steven serves style with his Boston-style sunglasses, and Yohey has vintage black frames that go with his corduroy jacket. The band never fails to thrill music fans who attend their live shows. Those fans however will have to wait a little bit longer to see them again, as their February tour planned to begin this month has been postponed.
