The new normal: A year after the pandemic began, China now faces the challenge of preventing the virus from spreading more deeply into its vast rural areas during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday when hundreds of millions of people typically travel from big cities to their rural hometowns (chunyun in Chinese). Typically, 300 million migrant workers make the trip home by train. This year, the State Council, China’s cabinet, issued an unusual call to the public for people to stay put and avoid nonessential trips during the Lunar New Year period.
Here’s the way it looked 5 years ago shooting a story on China’s railways. From the over-crowded station waiting rooms and platforms, to jam packed 3rd class seating, these were some of the most challenging locations I’ve ever worked in. #chinesenewyear2021 #springfestival #yearoftheox #chunyun
