“Like the video films we saw…”
When The Man Who Fell To Earth premiered at the Odeon Leicester Square in London in March 1976, it was still possible to go and see it for a while afterwards when it went on general release. There were also one-off screenings on a fairly regular basis at places like The Scala in Kings Cross in London.
There was no facility to watch it at home until the advent of the Betamax version and later still, the VHS in the early eighties. However, if you lived in Germany you could watch it on Super 8 film when it was released there commercially as three volumes in 1977.
These days it’s another of those redundant formats, but still very desirable to some, if you can locate it.
