They are supported by millions more farmers and other workers across India, some 250 million of whom went on strike in late November to support the farmers' cause. They are protesting new laws which aim to ‘modernise’ the Indian agricultural system - in other words, to deregulate and coporatise Indian agricultural markets, and to remove long-standing safeguards for farmers, transferring more power to big buyers, like supermarkets. The effects for small farmers, who make up the majority of farmers in India, will likely be to squeeze them out of the market. Where they are able to keep farming, the reforms will likely force them to take up more intensive practices. We are inspired that these millions of small farmers are taking a stand for what they believe: that a different vision of progress is possible, and that they are at the core of that vision. We must help ensure their voices are heard! Our mission is to share the voices of small-scale and regenerative farmers here in the UK and around the world.
