Luminaries at a Five Star Landmark
The Imperial Hotel has been visited by many prominent people from all over the world during its 130 years of business.
Today we focus on the world’s undisputed king of comedy, Charlie Chaplin, who visited the capital twice, in 1932 and in 1936.
Chaplin was extremely popular in Japan at the time; on his arrival at the Imperial Hotel he was entirely surrounded by a gigantic crowd of adoring fans.
Chaplin, who ended a very lengthy period of travel with his stay in Tokyo, is said to have fallen in love with our local beefsteak.
In this series, we spotlight colorful episodes and famous special guests who stayed under our roof during their visits in the old Japanese capital.
