Photos by @estherhorvath / The Svalbard reindeer rests in the town of Ny-Ålesund in Norway's Svalbard archipelago. The Svalbard reindeer is the northernmost subspecies of reindeer, found only in the region. Nearly extinct in the early 1900s due to heavy hunting, the reindeer gained protected status in 1925. One the main challenges for these reindeer is the lack of food when ice locks them out of pastures–caused by rain falling on snow in winter and freezing over. I witnessed this myself when I visited Ny-Alesund.
