A tale of giant balls… War is horrible. I’ve witnessed it. If it’s possible to inflict more suffering than war, an act most sinister, it would be a siege. What began in 1187 rendered these two hundred fifty kilograms (five hundred pounds) catapult balls useless. Today, they collect endless dust coatings in their original storage room at Shobak Castle (Krak de Montreal) in southern Jordan. The castle was impenetrable by 11th-century conventional warfare. At that time in history, the fortress was ruled by a fellow named Raynald of Châtillon, who used the citadel to attack passing rich caravans. Upon hearing Raynald was about to attack Mecca, troops led by Ayyudib sultan Saladin surrounded Shabak, perched high on a hill. He used a simple, torturous tactic - encircle and remain at a distance, cutting off all food and supplies to the nearly 6000 people and soldiers within. Saladin’s army waited, patiently, until everyone inside began to starve to death. Desperate, in male dominating atrocity, those who endured sold their wives and children for food and began to go blind due to lack of salt. The siege lasted for two years, and in 1189 those who remained surrendered, never launching the catapults. Century after century, until now, in want to control trade, pillage resources, or inflict misery upon others, such tactics are employed. Only today, not using giant balls...
