“Early precursors to RIMOWA’s introduction of polycarbonate in 2000, like vinyl and ABS, first set the tone for a wave of innovation that anticipated the needs of early airfare passengers.
Injection molding allowed for infinite options when it came to texture. Dyes could be added before the resin set, making coloring more than skin deep. Together, these qualities substantially expanded the repertoire for RIMOWA. Experimentation with ABS resulted in a range of styles that could emulate the delicate surface and shades of natural leather and the familiar sheen of aluminum. […] Eventually, this culminated in the Limbo collection introduced in 1982 and the Samba in 1986. These lightweight, dent-resistant ABS cases adopted the smooth surface and now-iconic grooves of the aluminum models but added a new spectrum of color options.”
