Currently, nearly 27,000 gray whales are nearing the end of the longest mammal migration on the planet. These massive ocean dwellers have been swimming from the Arctic waters of Alaska to their warm breeding grounds in Baja California, Mexico. January is typically the best month to see southbound gray whales along the Californian coast, with hundreds of whales passing by every day. While out at sea the other day, we counted nearly 40 whales, all within just 1 hour! On a side note, as you look at this photo, check out the digits in the flipper/pectoral fin. When whales are younger, their blubber and skin have not reached their full thickness, revealing the bones underneath. So if you live in California, or anywhere along the West Coast, keep an eye open for the gray whales migrating by!
