Growing up in New Jersey, our summers were spent by the shore, walking the boardwalk where my first "pet" was found...a hermit crab! I didn't give much thought to where these little crabs come from, but I learned what their lives and communities are like when I visited the remote coral atolls of the Pacific. On Wake Atoll, one of seven islands that is part of Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, hermit crabs are literally everywhere. They are in the trees, in beaches, in your shoes. These crabs have a unique shell changing process that relies on their community, sometimes forming groups of 20 or more crabs, where they all swap shells to accommodate their growing bodies.
