On this MLK day, we remember and honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — a legacy that often gets whitewashed and watered down. In order to accurately honor Dr. King, we have to understand just how radical of a man he was.

In the 1960’s, Dr. King was not a beloved figure by most of America. Like BLM protestors and the black community today, he was condemned, threatened, harassed, arrested, beaten, and ultimately murdered for his radical beliefs on racism and inequality, poverty, education, health care, capitalism, and militarism. While he did preach about peaceful protest and love over hate, he also understood the anger and pain coming from his community, making such statements as “a riot is the language of the unheard” and “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

Dr. King paid the ultimate price for these beliefs, but the progress he made and the change he inspired revolutionized America, challenging the status quo and the very foundations upon which our country was built.

It is also important today to honor Coretta Scott King, author, activist, human rights leader, and wife of Dr. King who left an incredible legacy all her own in the fight against racial and gender-based injustice, participating in demonstrations and marches for various causes throughout her life and centering women’s voices in economic and social movements.

After his death, Coretta founded The King Center, a memorial foundation dedicated to advancing Dr. King’s legacy, and spearheaded the movement to establish MLK Day as a federal holiday, ensuring her husband’s legacy would continue to be honored every year. Without Coretta Scott King, there would be no Martin Luther King Day. Thank you to the King family for ensuring Coretta’s legacy is remembered alongside her husband’s.

Today, let us build on the King legacy. Let us push for equality not only in letter but in practice of the law. Let us demand justice for the black community. Let us not lose hope.

Though we have far to go, we must continue forward, together. Let us honor Dr. King’s legacy by picking up where he left off. There is work to be done — let’s get to it.
