(And read on for the story..🔨)⠀ ⠀ Our Bespoke team were thrilled to be commissioned to create an 18ct gold coin mount for this victorian penny, 'countermarked' by the Suffragettes to further the cause of women's suffrage in the early twentieth century!🗳️⠀ ⠀ Countermarking is the practice of stamping a coin *after* it is in circulation. The Suffragettes were inspired by a long history of sending political messages by countermarking, and laboriously stamped coins like this one by hand, with the message 'Votes for Women'.🙌 Defacing money was, and is illegal, yet countermarking coins was seen to be an effective method of advertising the suffragette cause whilst also demonstrating an ideological protest against male authority figures and a political system that had long disenfranchised women! ⠀ ⠀ Our Bespoke team designed the coin mount to feature twisting Ivy leaves and vines.🌿 Ivy is traditionally a symbol of strength associated with the victorian period and felt highly appropriate to the heritage of the coin.🥰 Heirloom diamonds from the owner were added to the mount for a little extra precious sparkle! 💎⠀ ⠀ If you would like to commission a piece of 18ct gold jewellery (or something a little more unusual) from our Bespoke team, please click through the link in bio to find out more about the service and make an enquiry!
