This small altarpiece of the Nativity is 700-years-old, dating to circa 1320. Painted in tempera and showing the remains of gold ground, it also depicts, in the lower half, Saint Christopher, Saint John the Baptist and a female saint. Its close comparison with the work of Pietro da Rimini – one of the most prominent early 14th-century painters influenced by Giotto, who had come to Rimini in Italy in the first years of the 1300s – is confirmation of the painting’s origin in a Riminese workshop.
Property of the descendants of William and Robert Adam, the renowned Scottish father-and-son architects, the panel is a highlight of our Royal & Noble sale, opening for bidding until 14 January. Click the link in bio for more details.
