I think for a lot of athletes, this particular competition is a highlight every year. Something about performing for a home crowd along with having all of our team in one place makes it really special. Of course, through the disappointment, I recognize that these are small things in comparison to what the world is going through. Through trying to navigate the fine line of allowing myself to ‘grieve’ pandemic losses versus keeping perspective, I’m left with the thought that maybe these are the days worth remembering. The days when we were disappointed but still went to work; when it seemed kind of hopeless and pointless but we carried on with blind optimism that everything would work out. Because the accumulation of these days lead to the big ones. The days when things click. Or the days with the headlines. Days we like to live on repeat in our minds. One day when this chapter is over, I think that’s what I’ll remember. My journey is made up of a bunch of strung together, mediocre days with varying degrees of 100% effort. Most of those included laughter, some of them had tears, all of them had a team pushing for a common goal. The times that I will miss the most when all is said and done.
