Rachel Kushner grew up in San Francisco in the 1980s, coming of age among a hard crowd in the Tenderloin and the Sunset District. “Was I hard?” she writes. “Not compared with the world around me. I tell myself that it isn’t a moral failing to be the soft one, but I’m actually not sure.” Kushner left for good in her 20s, but her friends all stayed. “The place still defined me, as it has them.” She reflects on the city, and the people she met there, at the link in our bio.
