Where I'm staying in northern Norway, we never see the sun. The other side of the bay gets about 30 minutes of sunshine if it isn’t cloudy or raining. As the region enters the Polar Night, where the sun never truly rises, this shady side is in for the long haul without sun for the next four months. Long winters and seemingly endless darkness may break some, but research has shown that residents here have lower rates of wintertime depression than you might expect. I hope to retain the lessons of a positive attitude toward winter when returning for the season of short days in the United States.
