There had been smaller scale exhibitions previously which had a few costumes on loan, but nothing compared to the scale and ambition of David Bowie is.   Alan Yentob’s 1975 Cracked Actor documentary for the BBC’s Omnibus programme had Bowie going through some of his stage costumes. It was great to have it confirmed that he had probably kept everything, and it gave life to the hope that one day fans would be able to see the originals in the fabric.  Twenty years before the V&A launched their globe-trotting retrospective visited by millions, Arena magazine published a 23-page Bowie retrospective in their May/June 1993 issue. The cover featured a striking image by photographer Nick Knight, whose work had recently graced the cover of the Black Tie White Noise album.  The article also had lots of great contributions from Bowie’s friends and associates and an exclusive interview with the man himself. It really is worth picking it up if you can, second-hand copies turn up frequently.  Arena was yet another ray of hope that something on a grander scale would be collected and shown somehow, with images of the better-known items of clothing along with other pieces from the archive. Who knew that it would be another twenty years before it happened?  Meanwhile scroll through the images of Bowie outfits that appeared in the mag. Among them you'll see the Freddie Burretti suit as worn on the cover of David Live. Eagle-eyed readers will notice that the buttons have been replaced with white ones, which is how the suit was for Live Aid.
