Corina Newsome, a 27-year-old from Philadelphia (@hood__naturalist), grew up with her nose buried in wildlife encyclopedias, studying species from different corners of the world and jotting down her favorites in a journal. After college, she worked at the Cleveland Metroparks and Nashville zoos, conducting animal shows and environmental education. Native species, at the time, seemed boring. And she had little interest in memorizing hundreds of birds by sight and sound.

“Like, who does that?” she quips from her Georgia apartment on a video call earlier this year.

These days, Corina does that. The biologist who helped spread the message of #BlackBirdersWeek finds hope in birds. She wants others to experience that, too. Specifically, she wants more Black people to enjoy birding, and she wants it to feel safe for them.
