DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 63

“You can't hide beat...”

The title track from Scary Monsters was released on this day in 1981 in the UK. Edited down to 3'27" from the album’s full-length version of 5'10", the record was backed by another track from the same LP, Because You're Young.

There was no 12" in the UK this time (there was one in Germany), but instead it was issued a couple of weeks after the 45 as the first ever Bowie cassette single, or cassingle as they came to be known.

Bowie cassingles were released sporadically over the years, with the last commercial one being Thursday’s Child in 1999. They usually played the same tracks on both sides.

The single made the UK Top 20, with the release of the new format no doubt helping it stay there a second week. Not bad considering it was the third single from the album.

A recent poll named the Bowie/Visconti produced Scary Monsters the best single of the 80s. *

Our montage shows the front (black) and back (red) of the cassingle at bottom right, and the German 7" top left, with the UK 7" beneath that.

The German 7" sleeve flipped the UK cover images, featuring the polaroid image taken by Edward Bell on the front as the UK had on the reverse. Bell designed the sleeve including the menacing figure utilised in the adverts.

If you’re thinking of venturing into the world of collecting Bowie cassingles, check out a complete list of them over on BowieOnTape.com.

* Admittedly the poll was only conducted at Bowie Instagram HQ this afternoon, but tons of Britpop bands who used it as a blueprint in the 90s would most likely agree with our findings.
