Ancient Irish traditions,
St. Stephen’s Day, also known as #WrenDay. Less popular now, but years ago it was customary for groups of "wren boys" to go from house to house, singing songs and begging for coins, drink, and food. There was a belief that a wren flew up out of a bush where Stephen was hiding from Roman soldiers, giving away his location and leading to his death. In Ireland, it inspired the hunting and killing of wrens each year on Dec. 26, (now replaced by a fake bird) which were then displayed by the #wrenboys as they made their rounds of neighbors' homes.
