Running, to me, started out as a way to make it home from school safely growing up in Detroit. Eventually, running would turn into a way to escape violence in all racial aspects of life. Over the years, with the help of amazing mentors and my family, I was able to use my ability to run to get an athletic scholarship at a D1 school and become the first person in my family to go to college. I started climbing in my late twenties. I never saw someone I could identify with as a climber so I studied what it would take for me to be the best climber I could be. Every mountain I started climbing or hiking up I was never the same person once I reached the top. I would mentally come to terms with different racial wounds that I had to navigate in silence to climb and conquer my own internal fears and heights along the way. After climbing over 50 different mountains around the world, I started to see that though I was free to be in nature, other minorities were not given the same access. I decided to try to train and become the first African American to climb the highest mountain and volcano on each continent to stand up for racism in society and diversity needed in nature, but also to give others the opportunity to see that they can be more than just where they stand in life regardless of their race or gender. I hope to see you along the journey up the mountain, in the ocean or just walking to enjoy life. I hope that I can learn from you, be inspired to keep climbing on from what you have to say about life as well.
