1/6 - The Road Ahead — Connection:

COVID has meant and will continue to mean both extreme isolation and extreme togetherness. For the almost one in five people who say they temporarily or permanently relocated this year, 37% say it was to be closer to family or friends*. In many cases, people are enduring periods of quarantine alone before joining pods where they will be intensely together with others.

Once having joined pods, we are both together and alone with most connection to the outside world being digital. Inside each pod, the safety of the group depends on each individual’s willingness to limit contact outside of it. And still, many people are separated from their families and friends, unable to be with their loved ones entirely. These are unprecedented ways of being together and apart at a time when we need each other most. With these changes, the nature of the way we connect with each other is changing too.

Featured: Catherine and Kilian who, after podding up with Catherine’s family, instituted 3-days a month in an Airbnb to make sure everyone gets some space; @protegerdaily/@gatorham who quarantined with his parents long-term after planning only a few-week visit but is planning to join a pod of friends soon; @suzettesagisi who came home from Europe to quarantine with her sister, then quarantined again before staying with a friend; and @annegajer who uses airbnbs to get a change of scenery and the occasional break from her pod.
