Racers from around the world came to the Salt Flats to try to break land-speed records, and in 1959 Athol was able to take his racer up to 344 mph. During an attempt to break the 400 mph mark in 1960, he crashed at Bonneville going over 300 mph and died.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ “I was just 4 years old,” said Butch, who’s now 64 and lives in Salt Lake City. “I have seen many pictures of the two of us together, but I have no memory of him.”⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ His mother eventually gave the car to a man in Las Vegas, but Butch tracked him down 40 years ago to get it back. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ “When I started restoring it, people who knew my father came out of the woodwork to help me,” he said. “I have had old guys hunt me down, come to see the car, and just start to cry.”⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Butch took every December off to work on the car. On the 50th anniversary of his father’s death in 2010, he brought it back to Bonneville to show it off.
