Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto / Tires pile up at Black Bear Carbon recycling facility in the Netherlands. Every year, more than 1.5 billion end-of-life tires enter the global waste stream. Black Bear aims to make new industrial raw materials out of them.

After sorting the tires, those that are unsuitable for retreading or reuse go through various stages of recycling. After the extraction of steel wires, tire rubber is shredded and heated to be broken down into oil and char. While the oil is reused for the production of lubricants and biodiesel, the char can be reused in tires, inks, coatings, and rubber goods.

By designing waste out of the production system, such "circularity" aims to keep resources and materials in use. While a circular economy is promising, the truth is there isn't one single solution. Yet each one of us can make a big difference by living more consciously and staying informed. Please follow me @lucalocatelliphoto to learn more about the promising new solutions to the pressing issues facing our planet.
