At 9:27 p.m. tonight, the United States federal government executed Brandon Bernard.
In the thirty years prior to 2020, three people have been executed by the federal government — the last in 2003.
After a 17-year hiatus of the federal death penalty, in the midst of a pandemic claiming hundreds of thousands of lives, the Trump Administration and Attorney General Barr decided to resume capital punishment.
Black people, including Black disabled, LGBTQ, and low- and no-income people, are disproportionately incarcerated and sentenced to death in the U.S. We must abolish the death penalty, life without the possibility of parole (LWOP), & death by incarceration.
Brandon Bernard was the ninth person to be federally executed this year. Unfortunately, he won’t be the last.
