Andy Hampsten, man-turned-legend on the Gavia Pass at the Giro d'Italia in 1988, evokes the imminent arrival of winter.
On the 71st occasion of one of cycling's Grand Tour races, American Andrew Hampsten put on a performance for the ages. On the 14th of twenty-one total stages, amid extreme weather conditions, Andy attacked the final climb of the Gavia Pass — 8589 ft to be exact — through freezing rain, hammering snow and treacherous terrain. Dubbed by Italian media as "The Day The Big Men Cried", it was the momentum from this iconic moment that catapulted Andy into becoming the first and only American since to don the maglia rosa in Giro history.
