🐬🌊 Sploosh! This is Oceanus, a sea-god from ancient Greek mythology who was father of the river gods and sea nymphs.

In this unique Roman furniture fitting, intricate seaweed fronds frame Oceanus’ face, beard and moustache. Tiny dolphins beneath each ear swim down towards his chin while serpentine creatures rest on either side of his temples.

It dates from around AD 43–200 and was found in Hampshire in the south of England.

This remarkably well-preserved object is one of over 47,000 finds recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme this year ✨
