In a year defined by distance, few entertainers have worked harder to connect with their fans—both in front of the camera and directly, on social media—than #LaKeithStanfield, who has starred in films such as “Short Term 12,” “Knives Out,” “Get Out,” “Sorry to Bother You,” and on the TV series “Atlanta.” For his latest movie, “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Stanfield plays the FBI informant William O’Neal, whose betrayal leads to the interrogation and murder of the celebrated Black Panther Party revolutionary Fred Hampton. “It’s been the hardest role I’ve ever played,” he tells @イドリス・エルバ, his co-star in the upcoming Western “The Harder They Fall.” “If you Black, you my brother. I don’t give a fuck. It was challenging for me to jump into a character who doesn’t share that belief about his fellow Black man in America. He’s like, ‘I’m here to survive and get money and not be in a fucked-up situation.’ I can understand that to an extent, but I was so enamored of Fred and how young and powerful and courageous he was. It was really difficult to play a character that was in direct opposition to that. It caused me to have physical changes. I started having to keep a close watch on my mental health.
