Tradition is an essential part of life for the Hamar people, an incredible community from Ethiopia. I was very inspired by meeting this young bride just before her wedding. She had been staying behind closed doors so no one would see her prior to the ceremony. The Hamar people give special attention to their appearance, and young brides like her spend their time in isolation getting ready by covering their hair and bodies in a mixture of ochre mud and animal fat, and letting it dry. She looked incredible and I felt very fortunate when she agreed to be photographed despite not wanting anyone from her community to see her just yet.

La tradición es una parte esencial de la vida de los Hamar, una comunidad increíble de Etiopía. Me inspiró mucho conocer a esta joven novia justo antes de su boda. Había estado sin salir de casa para que nadie la viera antes de la ceremonia. Los Hamar prestan especial atención a su apariencia, y las novias jóvenes como ella pasan su tiempo en aislamiento preparándose: cubren su cabello y cuerpo con una mezcla de barro ocre y grasa animal, y lo dejan secar. Se veía increíble y me sentí muy afortunado cuando aceptó ser fotografiada a pesar de no querer que nadie de su comunidad la viera todavía.
