Wendy Red Star’s work explores the intersection between life on the Crow Indian reservation, where the artist was raised, and the world outside of that environment.

"Four Seasons" is a series of self-portraits where Red Star photographed herself inside dioramas depicting spring, Indian summer, fall, and winter. The dioramas, which Red Star constructed herself, recall installations one might see in natural history museums. In "Four Seasons," the artist dressed in traditional Crow garb and integrated other Crow art and artifacts. Added to the scenes are plastic flora, blow-up animals, cutout images, and other environmental imitations. According to the artist, "The 'Four Seasons' series is a remark on everything being constructed and fake except me and my culture. This is the beauty of the series, the confusion of stereotypes, where the lines begin to blur from truth and reality.”
