Today we’re taking a time-travelling trip back to Osaka, visiting the central Japanese city in the early 1800s.
Osaka is a city of water. Canals and bridges snake through the city, creating a distinctive landscape unlike other big Japanese cities – swipe to see a bird’s eye view 🏞
The mouth of one of the main rivers, Ajigawa, has recently been dredged, producing enough sand to build a small mountain in Osaka bay (image one). Now called Tenpō-zan, it’s a popular destination for leisurely outings, especially when the cherry trees are in bloom, making spring the most beautiful time to visit 🌸
Join curator Akiko Yano to sample the best sushi in town, experience the wonders of Kabuki theatre and explore the city’s bustling markets – link in bio.
🔎 Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), Settsu Ajigawa-guchi Tenpozan (Mt. Tenpo at the Mouth of the Aji River, Settsu). Colour woodblock print, c.1834.
🔎 Yoshimura Shuzan (1700–1776), Six-panel screen showing a bird's-eye view of the northern outskirts of Osaka. Ink, colour, and gold leaf on paper, 18th century.
