She was shot in the head by poachers and must’ve run away as the bullet luckily missed her vitals. The picture with the forceps shows the downward trajectory of the bullet which shows the poachers may have been in a vehicle as it’s unlikely that a downward shot would’ve been realistic on foot. The unnecessary suffering this poor critically endangered black rhino has had to endure is beyond me and makes me incredibly angry, all essentially due to human greed. Seeing pictures is no substitute for the sounds, sights and smells that you are confronted with witnessing this. This is what rangers, anti poaching teams and vets regularly have to see. This rhino poaching scourge is likened to a war for good reason, but to win wars you need to be a step ahead of your opponent and we’ll funded. Unfortunately many smaller reserves lack the funding. Dinokeng is no different and that’s why my foundation is getting involved to help raise some much needed funding for the anti poaching unit. Make no mistake, the team is incredible and are super effective with what meager means they have but they could be so much more effective if they didn’t have to worry about money. If there was no market in the Far East for rhino horn this would not have happened and I wouldn’t be posting this. But there is and I do have to. She’s considered to be one of the lucky ones as she’s at least still alive. It’s a paltry consolation considering that she should never be in this position in the first place and has weeks if not months of recovery ahead.
