#GagosianOnline: Over the next eight days, almost twenty works will be made available on gagosian.com in four curated presentations for Art Basel Miami Beach Online. The first cycle is now live and presents five artworks featuring various strategies of material experimentation that demonstrate the innate power of abstraction.

In 2012 Theaster Gates began to formalize his knowledge of roofing techniques into a new territory of experimental painting, working with tar to make the invisible roof legible. In a new suite of paintings completed this year, Gates has intensified this approach. Ellsworth Kelly expands the boundaries of painting as a medium by arranging two monochromatic canvases so that they enter into a sculptural relationship akin to low relief, thereby exploring dimensionality, depth, and projection on physical and visual terms.

Pier Paolo Calzolari considers the sensual yet fragile presence of tobacco leaves against the perception of language as fixed, represented by the invariable neon text. Mining the formal beauty of his materials, Brice Marden uses oil paint and graphite to augment the naturally occurring veining found in a slab of Naxian marble, producing an equilibrium between art and nature.

Michael Heizer’s negative wall sculpture, which is composed of a split volcanic rock set into a shaped steel box, calls into question the compositional and material boundaries of a work of art through his transposition of typical distinctions between interior and exterior, site and void.
