Did you know that what they call "penitentes" or "nieves penitentes" are snow deposits, that can be found at high altitudes above 4,000 metres where the air is dry, such as in the regions between Argentina and Chile ?

They take the shape of elongated, thin blades, closely spaced and pointed towards the general direction of the sun, of hardened snow or ice. They vary from a few centimetres to over 5 metres in length.

They form a mechanism called "sublimation", as the sun's rays transform snow directly into water vapour without melting it first.

Depressions are first produced by an initially smooth snow surface when some regions randomly sublimate faster than others.

In the depressions, the angled surfaces then concentrate sunlight and drive sublimation, leaving behind the higher points as forests of towering spikes.
