Whenever we walk anywhere (which is a lot since we are avoiding public transportation), Harlow’s favorite thing is pointing out all the pretty outdoor restaurant set-ups that are being built and altered for winter all around Manhattan. “Look at the flowers on that one!” “Ooooh. I like the way they have strung their lights.” “Oh look! They got heaters!” We debate which ones look safe and which ones look like they have just found some kind of indoor dining loophole. We talk about tables that are too close together and how we like the ones with the plastic partitions. Although indoor dining is open in Manhattan now, we still only eat outdoors, and since the weather is getting colder and case numbers are rising, we have started supporting our local restaurants mainly with takeout. The colder weather is definitely starting to take its toll on the vibrancy of the city over these last few months, when all the outdoor dining felt safe and festive. The winter is going to be so hard on restaurants and I hope they make it through to the Spring, when the sun returns, the second wave has passed and hopefully a vaccine will feel in reach. “Take a picture of that one, Mommy!” Harlow said to me while walking home the other day. “I hope when the Coronavirus is over, that one stays.”
