Architecture Classics: Los Clubes - Cuadra San Cristóbal and Fuente de los Amantes / Luis Barragán

At 62 years of age, in 1964, the Mexican architect Luis Barragán began the project of one of his most representative works: the Fuente de los Amantes, located within the Los Clubes neighborhood, in the municipality of Atizapán, State of Mexico.
This work is part of a larger intervention, associated within the same project with the Cuadra San Cristóbal (stables) and the Egerstrom House, designed by the architect for a community of horsemen. The set, completed in 1969, became a symbol of his work due to the impeccable use of water, the geometric abstraction of the different planes, and the use of color, recurring elements in his career.

The fountain is one of the spaces for public use within the project. This was supposed to be a living room for riders and their horses, but it was specifically designed as a drinking fountain for animals, not as a decorative fountain. Barragán describes it like this: "I calculated the depth of the pond so that when the horse passed, the water would reach its belly".
The rider enters through a side access framed by the great pink wall, then goes down to the pool on the horse, which plunges into the water. All this situation occurs accompanied by the noise of the water, which falls like a waterfall from the aqueduct perfectly supported on another wall of the same material. In this way the water appears calm and moving, changing.

The use of water is characteristic of his work and is influenced by Mexican colonial architecture. But he goes beyond the wells and aqueducts of the haciendas and convents, and designs them as sculptures independent of water, which can maintain their visual and spatial appeal, without the need to be in operation.
The Cuadra San Cristóbal, where the stables are arranged, is located 80 meters (approx.) From the source, but they form a single project due to the similar treatment of the elements and the programmatic relationship. The play of pink tones that paradoxically highlights the rather abstract geometry of the walls and the presence of water, link them reading as a single space.
