Back in March when the whole world shut down in the early days of the coronavirus, I figured the lockdown would be a good time to pursue some long-overdue stories on the pre-Loretta Lynn's AMA Amateur Nationals. Along the way of researching the old races of the 1970s I kept coming across the name Gene McCay. He was a minicycle prodigy from Tennessee who had all of the makings of a pro someday, only to be out of the sport before he was 18 years old. I knew all about him as a kid and wanted to know what exactly went wrong for him, but first I had to find him...
