With the Supreme Court hearing arguments on the Affordable Care Act this week and Republicans still willing to take folks’ health care away in the midst of a pandemic, we’re seeing how hard it is to protect the progress we’ve made. I’ve been reflecting back on the ups and downs on the road to health care reform—because of course, that was no easy task, either. But every step was worth it. Running for president, I heard devastating personal stories from people who were suffering without decent health insurance. It reminded me of my own mother, who, while battling cancer, was forced to fret not just about her chances of survival but about whether her insurance would keep her solvent during her treatment. These experiences only strengthened my belief that everyone should have access to good healthcare without having to worry about whether they can afford it. And that’s why as president, though my advisors warned me it was politically risky and would be an uphill battle, I made an early commitment to create legislation that would secure healthcare coverage for 20 million Americans. The day Congress passed the Affordable Care Act—March 21, 2010—I gathered in the Roosevelt Room with Joe and my staff to watch as C-SPAN broadcasted the vote, all of us feeling that despite the long odds, we’d managed to do something important and lasting to help the people who needed it the most. It was progress worth fighting for. And in the face of more than a decade of attacks, it remains so today. #APromisedLand
