The events of 2020 have rendered the protest chant ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, originally a catchcry for land rights, more critical than ever for Indigenous Australians. "All of our fights, all of our cries, lead us back to this central aspiration of our peoples as a whole," writes Amy McQuire. "The attempted genocide of our peoples was directly tied to the theft of Aboriginal land, and it is this surviving black presence over these same lands that is still perceived as a threat to the very idea of ‘Australia’."
