Despite their name, crabeaters feed primarily on krill, using their sieve-like teeth to filter water in a manner similar to baleen whales. Although they are thought to be the most abundant large mammal on Earth besides humans, the future of crabeater seals—and most of Antarctica’s wildlife—depends on krill, which feed off of the algae and phytoplankton that live beneath stable sea ice. Due in part to rising temperatures and overfishing, krill populations have declined by 80% since the 1970s.
