🦧🍇 Orangutans learn new husbandry behaviors through positive reinforcement training, allowing them to voluntarily participate in their own health care. Keepers ask them to present specific body parts so they can check for any abnormalities. Our orangutans also hold still to receive injections (like the flu vaccine) and participate in receiving radiographs, echocardiograms, ultrasounds and blood draws—all without the need for anesthesia! They receive a favorite treat (usually grapes) as a reward for participating.
