To mark National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week, curator @Tamsin_Hong takes a closer look at one of her favourite works in Tate's collection by Australian artist Gordon Bennett (1955-2014).

Born in Monto, Queensland, in 1955, Bennett attended art school as a mature aged student from which his artistic career quickly gained recognition. His work ranged from pastiche to abstract, often critiquing Australia's national identity and drawing attention to debates around national history.

As a teenager, Bennett discovered his mother was one of the Stolen Generations, which was a period between 1910 and the 1970s when Australian government agencies forcibly removed ‘half-caste’ children from their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and country. This revelation had a profound effect on Bennett whose artistic practice challenged the cultural racism underpinning such policies while also using visual strategies to free himself from racial stereotypes.

"If I were to choose a single word to describe my art practice it would be 'question'. If I were to choose a single word to describe my underlying drive it would be 'freedom'. To be free we must be able to question the ways our own history defines us." - Gordon Bennett

NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but across Australia and across the globe. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself. #NAIDOC2020

'Possession Island' by Gordon Bennett will be on display in Tate Modern's 'A Year in Art: Australia 1992' opening in spring 2021.
