‘One Country Two Systems’ dead after NPCSC adopts framework to disqualify lawmakers

The Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPCSC) formally established a framework to disqualify Legislative Councillors (today/yesterday) by authorizing the Chief Executive to review their actions and strip their titles from them. Legislative Councillors from the Democratic Camp regard such decision as the death announcement of ‘One Country Two Systems’, which also formally destroys Hong Kong’s traditional separation of powers. This also effectively means that the Chief Executive’s powers will no longer be checked, and that Hong Kong formally becomes a society under a dictatorship just like the Mainland.

According to the decision made by NPCSC, the Chief Executive can strip the titles from Legislators if they are deemed to be advocating Hong Kong independence, colluding with foreign forces or threatening national security etc. Democrats said such decision effectively and objectively destroyed ‘One Country Two Systems’ and opened the floodgates for crushing the voices of the opposition.

Moreover, NPCSC’s decision also mentioned that all public officers in Hong Kong – including lawmakers – must support the Basic Law and be loyal to the SAR; this means that the NPCSC can arbitrarily establish such standards to other public officers including judges, judicial officers, District Councillors etc. in the future. This completely transforms Hong Kong from a society that values civilization and professionalism to one that only values the level of patriotism.

In the face of an authoritarian regime, Democrats deployed all legal measures to delay the passing of evil laws in the past month. The disqualifications of Legislators by Beijing and the government leaves Democrats no choice but to resign en masse. The disqualifications render ‘One Country Two Systems’ non-existent, and officially announce that ‘Two Systems’ is dead.
