British artist John Craxton first went to Crete in 1947, to visit a dancing sailor he had met in a Poros bar. Sailors feature frequently in the artist's work, often drinking, eating and smoking – Craxton loved wine, food and good company and he loved to paint such pleasures too. Having completed national service in the Greek Navy, the ex-sailor had returned to work as a butcher in Heraklion market but one evening in a taverna he performed an acrobatic dance over an upturned chair.
'Seated Figure' (1963) is one of a series of works on the theme of a sailor turned butcher. It is currently open for bidding on in our Modern British Art sale, head to the link in bio before 17 November.
