"The Baroque always connects two extremes, like light and shadow, in one body, one painting. History outside against a wild body inside, cultured and uncultured, cooked and uncooked, greed and expressionism, rationalism and irrationalism, cold and hot."
—Adriana Varejão
Happy birthday to Adriana Varejão, born on this day, November 11, in Rio de Janeiro. Varejão's first exhibition with the gallery was at Gagosian Rome in 2016–17, followed by a second exhibition in Los Angeles in 2017. We are pleased to announce her next exhibition with us in New York in 2021.
In her painting, sculpture, and video installation, Varejão uses aesthetic tactics of simulation, juxtaposition, and parody to reflect on Brazilian identity. An avid researcher, she investigates the complex material culture of the Baroque period, revealing how new visual vocabularies emerge from the physical and ideological encounters of colonialism and global trade. Follow the link in our bio to learn more about the artist’s previous exhibitions with Gagosian.
