Myanmar, where this Burmese peacock softshell turtle is found, supports one of the most diverse groups of chelonians (turtles, terrapins, and tortoises) in Southeast Asia. The fact that we know very little about these species is troubling, as it makes helping them more difficult in the face of growing threats. As a group, softshell turtles are in high demand by Chinese wildlife markets, and as a result many populations have experienced steep declines. Thankfully conservation organizations are working to preserve species like this one through assurance colonies to produce individuals that can one day be released into the wild.
