In this historic moment, we’re sharing a remarkable trove of portraits taken from a single traveling photo booth. Considered as a whole, the collection forms a composite portrait of America.

People from all walks and stages of life sat in front of the camera—babies propped up in miniature chairs, groups of siblings, couples young and old—as the booth bounced around carnivals, amusement parks, and fairs across the Midwest and Southern United States from the 1930s to 1960s.

Over time the backdrop changes, although far less frequently than the faces of sitters and their fashions. Why the proprietor retained this archive is an open question. Then as today, these faces embody the incredible diversity and spirit of our country. #WeThePeople
