Unique to North America, American Bison are the largest land mammals found on the continent. In 2016 the National Bison Legacy Act was passed, making bison the official national mammal of the USA! The oldest and largest American Bison herd can be found in Yellowstone National Park. At one time, back in the 1500s, about 50 million bison roamed freely across all of North America. The bison population dwindled to only 300 by the late 1800s and were on the brink of extinction. This was due to the US federal government sanctioning the slaughter of bison as a way to eliminate an important source of food, clothing and shelter for Native Americans. By the end of the 18th century congress outlawed hunting in Yellowstone National Park, which is why the oldest bison herd can still be found roaming free there today. #NationalBisonDay」11月8日 0時05分
