Unlike many species of fish which sport scales, pinecone fish like this one @dallas_childrens_aquarium are covered in scutes, which create a horny outer layer that is not too different from the texture of a real pinecone. Most active at night, this fish has light producing organs filled with luminescent bacteria on each side of its lower jaw. Researchers are not certain of the light’s true function, but it is suspected that it may help the fish to see at night, or to attract prey. #fish #pinecone #pineconefish #scutes #nocturnal #luminescent #PhotoArk #savetogether
